The 1967 to 68 North East High School boys’ basketball team was the first team in the school's history to reach the final 4 in the PIAA state championships. They posted a record of 20 -6, set a school record of 12 consecutive wins, averaging 72 points per game while winning the District 10 championship. Rick Rouse and Tom Maas were all County first-team selections with Rick leading the Erie County League in scoring. The following year, 1968-69, Rick Rouse, Bob Heiden, and Ralph Campbell led the team back to the final 4. In a memorable game played at Gannon's Hammermill Center, the team edged crosstown rival Saint Gregory's, by a score of 49 to 46. Members of the team were Tom Murray, Jim Detzel, Tom Wilkinson, Rick Rouse, Jim Francis, Jack Power, Dave Meehl, Bob Heiden, Larry Nagelson, Chris Detzel, Ralph Campbell, and Tom Maas. Head coach Ted Miller was assisted by Al Wagner and Fred Maroglio.

The 1967 football squad was the first and only team to go undefeated at 9-0 in the school's history. They outscored their opponents 266 to 70 and claimed the Erie County League championship. Team captains were David Meehl and Russell LaFuria. Jim Detzel was the top scorer and led in most offensive categories. Other members of the team were: Jeff Blakeslee, Bob Bostwick, Gary Brown, Tom Eaton, Rick Howell, Dan Kramer, Greg McGill, Dave Spada, Larry Arnick, Charles Boundarant, Tom Daly, Chris Detzel, Larry Eastman, Bob Heiden, Larry Nagelson, Mac Neil, Jack Stetson, and Bob Koprowski. Head coach Jim Concilla was assisted by Al Wagner, Bruce Campbell, Bill Lewis, and Jim Bemiss.
