2007 and 2008 NEHS Boys' Basketball Teams

    2007-2008 Boys’ Basketball Teams

The 2007 and 2008 boys’ basketball teams dedicated themselves to the goal of being the best team in the history of North East basketball.

The team was led in scoring by two-time All-State point guard Matt Triana. Mike Rouse, Aaron Meehl, and Ryan Szwejbka were chosen All-Region both their junior and senior years. Bryan Kirsch, Cory Rossman, and Patrick LaFuria were as good as many starters on most teams and made huge contributions from the bench.

These teams were back-to-back Regions champions and back-to-back District 10 Champions, finishing 7th in the state in 2007 and 4th in the state in 2008. Their record of wins and losses was 56-5 over two years. Their four-year varsity career record was 104-15. Most impressive is that their 29 victories their senior year is a school record, and this particular group of seniors never lost a game on their home floor. This team is truly special as they chose to play for each other.

The coach, Thomas Pyle, was chosen by the Associated Press as the Pennsylvania Small School Coach of the Year. Teams like this, from a small school, don’t come around very often. They had a lot of fun yet worked extremely hard and even today represent the highest standards with their commitment to advance North East. It is an honor to induct the 2007/2008 boys’ basketball team to the North East Athletic Hall of Fame.

1982 Girls' Cross Country State Champions

    1982 Girls’ Cross Country

Team members were Eileen Lebold Hogan, Jeanne Lebold Suber, Beth Weber, Gretchen Weber Bukowick, Anne Gray Alcorn, Cathy Field Shader, Liz Ellison, Maureen O’Leary Ripple and were coached by Ted Miller.

This team went 8-0 in regular season meets during the year in the first-ever undefeated season for NE Girls’ Cross Country.

They won three of four invitationals – McDowell (41 pts without Eileen who was unable to compete) in the first ever major invitational championship for NE Girls’ Cross Country; Gannon (29 pts); and Central Catholic (31 pts – the lowest score in the history of meet). They finished 2nd in the California State Invitational.

The team also finished 1st in the County meet with 16 points – finishing 1-4th, 6th and 10th places with a 1:07 spread. (Eileen was 1st, Jeanne was 2nd, Gretchen placed 3rd, Beth finished 4th, Anne was 6th, Maureen placed 10th, and Marie Latxague (foreign exchange student) was 18th).

The team also finished 1st in the District meet with only 15 points, sweeping the top five places with a 1:08 spread (Eileen was 1st, Jeanne placed 2nd, Gretchen finished 3rd, Beth was 4th, Anne placed 5th, Maureen was 7th, and Liz placed 13th). This “shutout” has never been achieved in District Ten Girls’ race before or since.

The team won its first PIAA State Title, finishing with just 55 points and a 50 second spread. Solid pack running of yellow jerseys surprised the other teams and their coaches. This was the first time a school from Erie County won the Girls’ State Championship and the first time in the history of the PIAA State Meet that both the girls’ and boys’ team from the same school won the state championships in the same year. In addition, the score of 55 points was the lowest score ever for a state championship team (at that time, all finish places – including individuals running without a team – were factored into scores). All State performances included Jeanne Lebold Suber (5th), Eileen Lebold Hogan (7th), Gretchen Weber Bukowick (8th), and Beth Weber (14th), supported by teammates Anne Gray Alcorn (21st), Maureen O’Leary Ripple (41st) and Liz Ellison (110th).

All of the athletes on this team worked hard to earn recognition for NEHS. It is an honor to induct them into the 2021 North East Athletic Hall of Fame.
