1987 Boys' Cross Country State Champions

The 1987 Boys’ North East Cross Country team, led by team captains Justin Jones Lantzy and Shane Munger, developed into a championship team over the course of the season.  Despite only winning one major invitational race, the McDowell Invitational, and losing to a strong General McLane team in September, the Grapepickers finished strong, dominating the County Meet, winning by almost 28 points and winning the District X Meet by a one point margin, slipping by Union City and Mercer who tied with 77 points.

Running their best race of the year on the Blue Course at Penn State, the team of Justin Jones-Lantzy, Joel Keith, Shane Munger, Dave McCombs, Jeff Stoddard, Tom O’Leary, and Doug Travis scored 231 points as they outran Green Castle- Antrim by 28 points.  District rivals Mercer and Union City were far behind scoring 402 and 468 points respectively.

On a bright crisp day Justin led his team running a time of 16:23 finishing in 4th place.  He was followed by teammates Joel Keith 14th in 16:41, Shane Munger 56th  in 17:22, Dave McCombs 57th in 17:22, Jeff Stoddard 100th  in 17:41,  Tom O’Leary 117th in 17:41, and Doug Travis 144th in 18:04.

1988 Boys' Cross Country State Champions

The 1988 North East Boys’ Cross Country team returned several runners from the previous year’s State Championship team, adding Jamie Seeley a first-year senior.  With a seasoned, experienced team the boys dominated several major championship races including the McDowell Invitational and the Central Catholic Invitational and finishing unbeaten in dual meet competition.  The team also dominated the County and District X meets.

Early in the season, Dallas from District 3 won the prestigious Spiked Shoe Invitational, scoring 98 points while the Pickers ended in 4th place with 139 points.  At the State Championship race at Indiantown Gap, on a cold, wet, day, running in muddy conditions, the Pickers proved to be the best team as they ran an excellent team race to outrun Dallas and every other team in the State.  The Pickers ended with 205 points with Dallas scoring 221.

Justin Jones-Lantzy led the way, finishing 5th in 16:03. Justin was followed by Joel Keith in 10th place in 16:17; Dave McCombs 21st in 16:35; Jamie Seeley 50th in 16:56; Jeff Stoddard 17:29 in 119th; Tom O’Leary 17:34 in 124th; and Doug Travis 18:02 in 168th. Their effort stunned Dallas who was the odds-on favorite to win the race. This was the best team performance ever recorded by a North East cross country team as 4 runners broke the 17 minute mark.  Justin, Joel, Dave, Jeff, Tom, and Doug, with help from Jamie Seeley became the back-to-back 1987-1988 State Cross Country Champions.
