    1986-87 Girls' Basketball Team

1986-87 North East Girls’ Basketball Team

The 1986-87 girls’ basketball season was one for the record books. The Lady Pickers Basketball team finished that season with the most recorded wins for any girls’ sports in North East School District history. This team was able to achieve 25 wins and only 5 defeats. The team was then able to play for the win and be crowned the Erie County League Champions and secure the PIAA District-10 Championship for North East High School.

If anyone remembers back that far, the Erie County League had first and second half champions. If there were two different winners for the halves, they then had to play a championship game. This team won the first half outright by being undefeated.

The Pickers then had a run of bad luck when the senior point guard, Maria Puccio, suffered a season-ending injury. She had led the team in assists and was the playmaker. No teams could press this team as she could destroy a press all on her own. Coach Gregg and Coach Shesman worked their magic and named Carolyn O’Leary point guard. Forwards Dawn Page and Sarah Langowski and guards Traci Beckes and Jessica Martin gelled with Carolyn as the team learned their new press offense. The team was able to rebound, but not before suffering two losses to Harborcreek and Girard. Girard then won the second half of the ECL. The Pickers now had to play Girard for the ECL Championship.

The highly anticipated game was to be played at Iroquois High School. As the countdown to game time was taking place, it became necessary to open the upstairs bleachers to accommodate the standing room only crowd. The crowd was not disappointed as the game went into two overtimes. In the first overtime, Sarah Langowski threw up a half-court shot at the buzzer! The officials sucked all the air out of the gymnasium by calling, “no basket.” In the second overtime, Girard led by one point by connecting from the charity strip with 7 seconds on the clock and one more foul shot left to shoot. Jess Martin rebounds the missed second shot and dribbles the length of the court, launches and drains an outside shot! Time on the clock - 0:00. The gymnasium exploded with cheers and thunderous applause as the North East fans flooded the floor! Girard Coach, Larry Seneta, is remembered to have said that he felt that game was THE breakthrough game for girls’ basketball in the ECL.

As the regular season ended, the girls entered the District X playoffs. The District X playoffs were held at McComb Fieldhouse, Edinboro, PA. Game one was against Reynolds. The North East team handily defeated them 54-37. From there, game two was to be played for the District X Championship. As fate would have it, the game to be played was the North East Grapepickers vs. the Cranberry Berries. McComb Fieldhouse became a sea of maroon and gold as the spectator buses emptied and the students from North East filled the gym right before tip-off. North East continued that winning streak and won the game with a score 44-35 and the first ever North East Girls District 10 Championship!

    1984 State Champion 3200 Relay

This team of Keith Jones, Troy Keith, Jim Johnson, and Dave Girts were the PIAA State Champions in the 3200 relay in the spring of 1984.  They were coached by Ted Miller who loved this event and had 24 team medals in the State Championship. This was the 10th team to medal and one of five to bring home the Gold! This team was District 10 Champions with a time of 8:05.1 and bettered their time at States winning with a time of 8:02.4. They are in the number 11 spot on the All time top tier list of 26 teams that had to run under 8:10.

Troy Keith and Dave Girts were two guys returning from a 2nd place 3200 Relay team at States the year before .  Coach Miller was always looking for two more runners to create a state caliber relay.  Keith Jones recalls Coach Miller and Coach Power as motivators to help him to become a good runner. He recalls how they gave him running advice that worked and how Coach Miller helped him out by giving him running shoes and spikes, and that impressed him that Coach was confident in him to be an important participant on the team. JJ Johnson recalls how he wasn’t going to run his Senior year as he had an opportunity to tour Europe.  He states, “Coach Miller was upset with me and let me know that I would have many opportunities to travel but only one time to be part of the NE track team! With family discussing this, I decided to run track. I was always a short distance runner like the quarter mile, but Coach was looking for another 800 runner and looked for me to fill these shoes. Coach needed someone and pressured me that I could do this.  It about killed me running my first 800, but I am glad that I did.   All four of us on the relay were so very blessed for this and for what Coach Miller did for us.  He taught us that we could do anything if we disciplined ourselves and kept our focus.”
