The 1962 880 relay team was a key part of the PIAA 1962 State Championship team. The 880 relay ran a 1:32.1 and came in first to be the first relay of any type to win states from District 10. In the photo, left to right: Dick Kennedy, Doug Burch, Allan Klenz, and Hal Lynn.

The 1968 two-mile relay team was PIAA Class B state champions. The team of Gary Murray, Jim Francis, Rick Rouse, and Jack Power ran an impressive 7:57.9 and set a PIAA record that held for 11 years. An interesting fact about this race is that there were 2 heats in the relay and North East somehow got stuck in the slow heat. The boys knew they had to run well because they were not competing head-to-head with top teams. They ran great splits and ended up as state champs and PIAA record holders. 1968 2-mile Relay left to right: Gary Murray, Jack Power, Rick Rouse, and Jim Francis

The 1971 North East High School boys' cross country team were PIAA Class B state champions. This was the first Erie County team to be state champions in cross country. There were only 7 boys on the team with a shortened year because North East was on a teachers' strike at the time. They overcame the situation with the team running coach Ted Miller's workouts on their own and finally started doing official workouts and running meets when the strike ended in early October. Leading the team at state with a 6th place finish was District 10 champion, Chuck Randall. Jim Lipnicky finished 23rd, Steve Hair 31st, Chuck Cline 70th, and Kevin Ore 74th. Steve Morey was 130th and Mike Wilkinson was 147th. The team finished with 96 points with Solanco was runner up with 123 points.
