  • Dave Lanahan

    Dave Lanahan

    Dave was a three-sport athlete at NEHS. He was a four-year varsity starter for basketball. He scored 1,295 points in his career and totaled over 500 rebounds, 500 assists, and 500 steals in his career. He was named to the all-state team following his senior year, in addition to first-team all-county and all-district selections in 1995 and 1996. In 1995, he was a member of the District 10 championship team for boys' basketball (23-6 overall record). His basketball teams combined for a 76-29 record over his four-year career. He holds the school records for free throws made in a season (161) and career (366). Dave also played soccer and ran track. He excelled in soccer where he set a school record for goals in a season. He was a multiple County and District 10 Champion in the 3200 relay, and his 3200 relay teams finished in 2nd place at the state meet in 1994 and 3rd place in 1995. He was a member of three District 10 championship teams in track and field. Dave had a mix of excellent coaches through his high school career (Phil Sarver – Soccer, Jim Young – Basketball, and Ted Miller - Track). Each of them had a lasting impact on his success in sports and helped channel his competitive drive. He continued his education and basketball career at Mercyhurst University on a Division II Scholarship.

    Dave McCombs

    A two-sport, four-year letter-winner in cross country and track, David was most noted as a long-distance runner. As a cross country runner, David was a member of four ECL championship teams, 1986 thru '89, and the 1987 and 88 PIAA State championship teams. In 1989, he finished fourth in the state meet with a 15:34, the standing fastest boys' time in a state cross country meet. In track, at PIAA States, he ran a 1:57 lead-off leg for the 1990 fifth place 3200m relay team and came back with a 9:27 in the 3200m for a third-place finish, and the fourth-fastest 3200m time in the North East records. David continued running cross country and track at Liberty University where he ran personal records in the 5,000m and 10,000m of 14:47 and 31:01. A Junior USA Track Team member in 1991, he competed in the 10,000m run at the Junior Pan-American Track and Field Meet in Kingston, Jamaica. He also became a competitive ultra-marathon runner, winning the 1993 Mountain Masochist 50 miler in 7hrs 12 min, setting the record for the youngest winner, and the 1995 Bull Run 50 miler in 7hrs 4min. In 1995 David earned an Exercise Science degree. David attended Marine Corps Officer Candidates School in 1996, becoming an infantry officer. David returned to competitive road racing in 1999 and won several road races from 10 to 25K distances on Oahu, Hawaii, including the Tantalus Triple Trek 30 miler in 4hrs and 5mins, a record time by 30 minutes. David competed on the 1999 All-Marine Marathon team in the Marine Corps Marathon and was the top U.S. Armed Forces finisher with a 2 hours 34 minutes time, and 12th place finish overall. David competed on the Marine Corps’ Marathon and Cross Country teams from 1999 to 2001, and compete in road races throughout his 20 year Marine Corps career which included four combat deployments to Kuwait, Afghanistan and Iraq. In 2016, David began teaching history and coaching, and competing in, orienteering at Fork Union Military Academy in Virginia. David relocated to Delaware in 2018, becoming a Marine Corps Junior ROTC instructor with First State Military Academy, and instructing courses in marksmanship and weight training. He became the cross country and distance track coach in 2019. David still competes in road races as time allows.

  • Greg Henderson

    Greg Henderson

    Greg lettered in Track and Cross country. He was the winner as a freshman of the very first cross-country race NEHS competed in. He was three times All-District 10 Cross country and Champion in 1964 and finished 8th at the PIAA States in 1963. In track, he was ECL 880 Champion in 1963 and 1964 and was ECL 440 Champion in 1965. He was a four-time member of the Erie County 4 X 440 championship team. Greg won the District mile in 1965 and finished 3rd in the 1964 state meet and 4th in the 1965 state meet. He finished his high school career with the second-fastest mile time and third-fastest 880 in school history. Greg ran track and cross country for the University of Florida, lettering in both sports. He was a member of the record-setting 4 X 880 relay team; and ran the mile in 4:17 and the 880 in 1:51.8.  As a coach, Greg brought a core group of four girls from junior high through their senior year in high school. At the Golden South meet in Orlando 1980, one of the 8th-grade girls won the 880 against a large field of high school runners including state champions from Florida and Kansas. In the 4 x 880, the girls ran the fastest time in the nation for high school girls (9:25.13). During the next four years. Coach Henderson’s girls' team broke the national 4X one-mile national record (20:46), finished 1,2,4, and 5 at the Florida Relays, and won two State Championships in Cross Country. Sandra Braasch won the State meet in the 880 for four years. The girls placed 1,2,3 at the Memphis AAU National Jr Olympics. The girls broke the indoor and outdoor 4 X 880 national records by an average of nearly 20 seconds during their junior year in high school. The records were unofficial as they were run against university teams indoors, and outdoors was run at the TAC meet at Duke. Greg was a two-time Florida Coach of the Year in Cross Country and multiple Jacksonville area Coach of the Year in Track and Cross Country. In 2003, Greg founded the Fleming Island Track and Cross-country programs, taking the girls team to the state meet the first two years of their competition.

  • Jake Hordych

    Jake Hordych

    Jacob Hordych was a four-year letter winner in both soccer and basketball for North East High School from 1996-2000 and then continued his soccer career at NCAA DIII Penn State Behrend from 2000-2004. While at North East High School, Hordych was a two-time soccer all-county selection as a goalkeeper, which included a 1st team all ECL selection as well as a PIAA All-State selection his senior year. Upon graduation from North East, Hordych went on to play 4-years at Penn State Behrend where he was named captain his sophomore year, earned all-conference his sophomore, junior and senior year, and was named All-Region / All-American his senior year after helping lead the Lions to a conference championship and their first-ever NCAA tournament appearance. Almost 2 decades later, Hordych is still ranked in the top 2 in multiple goalkeeper career stats for PSB. After Hordych’s playing career, he went on to coach the North East High School varsity girls' soccer team, leading them to one of the best program records at the time. Following his stint at NEHS, he moved on to coach at the college level for NJCAA Division I Mercyhurst North East, where in his 11-year career with the Saints women’s soccer team he became the winningest coach in program history. One of Hordych’s biggest accomplishments was being inducted into the Penn State Behrend Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013. Jake attributes all of his success to the people around him in life; teammates, players, coaches, teachers, mentors, friends, and most importantly his family.

  • Tricia Mahoney

    Tricia Mahoney

    Tricia Mahoney participated in softball, swimming, and basketball at North East High School graduating in 1979. She was a member of the 1977 County Championship Softball team and the 1977/78 County Championship Basketball team. She was coached by Dick Gregg and was chosen 1st team All-County in her sophomore, junior, and senior years. Tricia was the first female player to score over 1,000 points during her high school career. She led the team in points her sophomore, junior and senior years along with best field goal and free throw percentage her junior and senior years. She also led the team in steals during her junior year and assists in her senior year. She finished her career with the top game, season, and career points along with most consecutive free throws, best free throw percentage, and career free throw percentage. She received a scholarship to attend Mercyhurst University to continue her basketball career. She ranked in the top 10 of women’s college basketball players of her division breaking several records at Mercyhurst and becoming the first female to score over 1,000 points. She continues to hold the single-game scoring record for both male and female players at Mercyhurst. She received several academic awards for her accomplishments in the classroom including the National Honor Society and the top academic athlete award. She went on to attend the Mayo Clinic School of Health Related Sciences and received her Physical Therapy degree. She was able to share her love of basketball with many of her patients at Shriners Hospital while coaching the wheelchair basketball team there. She is currently a professor in the Mercyhurst University North East Physical Therapist Assistant program and works for Community Nursing Services of North East. Tricia is grateful for her number one fans Jim and Theresa Mahoney who gave her every opportunity to enjoy the game of basketball.
