Dick Gregg (1964) was a three-sport athlete at NEHS. He was the first Erie County Cross Country Athlete to qualify for the PIAA State Championships in 1961 on the first Cross Country team at NEHS with a fourth-place finish at Districts. He was District 10 Champion in Cross Country in 1962 and in 1963, and a PIAA State Medalist taking 12th place. In Track and field, Dick was County and District Champion in 1964 in the mile run. He was a contributing member of the 1963 and 1964 PIAA State Championship teams, taking 3rd in the mile in ’63 and 2nd in ’64. He was also a three-year letter winner in Basketball. He ran for Mansfield University in Pennsylvania and held university records in the mile and half-mile at 4:23 and 1:59.2. As a coach, Coach Gregg coached 7th and 8th-grade boys' and girls' Basketball, Girls' Varsity Basketball, Track and Field, and Cross Country. He coached Girls' Basketball at NEHS for 18 years and finished with a 329-159 record, making him with more wins in history for any coach for both boys and girls. His teams won 3 ECL championships and one District 10 Championship. He coached Cross Country and had 4 ECL Championship teams, 3 Region Championship teams, and 2 District 10 Championship teams. Coaching as an assistant coach in the jumping events in track, Coach Gregg produced several County and District Champions along with more than 20 state medalists, three who were state Champions in the Pole Vault and one that was State Champion in the Javelin. He became Head Coach in 1996 and has had four teams as ECL Champs and 11 Region Championships teams in both girls and boys.

Dwaine Bagley graduated from NEHS in 1962. At 6’6”, Dwaine Bagley was and will be remembered as North East’s all-time greatest “big man.” Dwaine was a First Team All-County performer in Basketball in 1961 and '62. Dwaine had a great Senior season as he had breakout games where he scored 30 points or more ten times and four games where he hit for over 40. Dwaine held the North East record of Most Points in a season at 692, which was a County record also at that time. He held the rebound record for a season at 504 and rebounds in a game at 45. Also, he held the record for most field goals in a season at 285. Dwaine continued his basketball career as he attended Gannon University on a basketball scholarship.

Dwayne “Stack” Dye graduated from NEHS in 1967. Dwayne was an exceptional athlete for North East High School in Football and Track and Field in his Junior and Senior Years. He started at center on the football team his Junior year and in his Senior year served as captain of the team. Dwayne was named First Team All-County at center his Senior Year. As a standout in NEHS Track and Field, Dwayne threw the shot Put. He was PIAA State Champion in his Junior year and was a silver medalist in the Shot Put in 1967. Dwayne is third on the all-time NEHS list with a shot put throw of 54’11”.

Father Gene Grohe-“Winning isn’t everything, but making the effort to do is!’ Father Grohe was the “Lifeblood” of St. Gregory High School for a 12 year period from 1956-1968. Father Grohe is being honored for the impact he had on the athletes and students’ lives during this era of time at St. Gregory’s High School. The church moves priests every six years, but the Parish was able to secure him for 12 years. Besides being the head of the church in North East, Father Grohe was a Teacher, Coach, Athletic Director, and Guidance Counselor. In emergency situations, he was a bus driver and custodian. He was an important factor in fundraising to keep the school as a K-12 school. After his tenure, the high school portion was forced to move to the public school. Father Grohe was not an athlete but impacted hundreds of students’ lives as well as the Parish in North East. He was considered a mentor to all.

Gary Murray (1969) was one of the most outstanding runners in the history of North East High School track and field. As a freshman and sophomore (’66, ‘67), Gary was Erie County Champion in cross-country. He was also a two-time cross-country District 10 Champion (’67, ’68). In Track and Field, Gary ran the anchor leg of the 3200m relay team that won gold and set the PIAA state record (’68). In 1970, Gary was the Erie County League Champion in the 800m and 1600m. He received the Outstanding Trackman Award (Youngsville Invitational) and Gem City Timers Outstanding Athlete Award (Erie County and District 10 meets). At the PIAA State Championships, Gary finished as State Champion in both the 800 and the Mile Run, where he set the PIAA state record at 4:17.6. Gary’s Mile Run record was held at NEHS for 42 years before being broken by Ryan Smathers. At graduation, he possessed two state records and three State Champion gold medals, more than any other in the history of Erie County Track and Field at the time. He was awarded County Athlete of the Year in 1970 by the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Post-graduation, Gary attended Penn State and the University of Florida – Gainesville on a full athletic scholarship, earning a BS in Health and Physical Education. He joined the US Air Force aligned to the National Security Agency and was Honor Graduate out of the USAF Leadership School (1986). He spent time in Japan and Korea and was awarded the prestigious Defense Meritorious Service Medal by the director of the NSA.

Joe Concilla-a 1950 Graduate of North East High School, Joe was an outstanding football player at NEHS. A four-year letterman, a two-year All-County performer, and the County’s MVP in 1950, Joe ran for 61 points, passed for 36 more, figuring in 97 points of North East’s team’s total production of 121 points. He also handled the punting duties kicking many times for 40-50 yards. In the 6th annual Lions All-Star game, Joe also quarterbacked the East over the West, scoring one touchdown and leading the team downfield to score two more. Joe also was a three-year letterman in basketball and baseball for NEHS. Joe went to the University of Cincinnati to play for legendary Coach Sid Gilman of the Bearcats. In his Junior Year, he was Cincinnati’s leading rusher and second-leading scorer. When he graduated in 1954, Joe held Cincinnati’s career records for most points scored, most touchdowns scored, and most rushing yards. He also played two years of baseball for Cincinnati, pitching for two seasons. Joe was offered a tryout with the New York Giants, but because of military obligation, he had to forego and serve in the Army in the Korean War. Joe was considered to be one of the finest athletes to come out of North East High School.

Mark Yori was a 1974 NEHS graduate. Mark was North East’s greatest wrestler ever. Mark was team captain during his Junior and Senior years at North East. He was the winner of tournaments and section titles and a First Team All-County Performer. Mark was the first North East wrestler to go to the PIAA State Wrestling Championships and the only wrestler to ever reach the state semi-finals, finishing third in the 119-pound division. He was a Pennsylvania State freestyle champion at 125 pounds, winning the gold medal at the Keystone State Games. Mark also excelled in track as he was All-County and ran on the 2-mile relay team that finished third in the PIAA Championships. Mark went on to wrestle at Peru State in Nebraska. He was an All-American in college winning over 100 matches and placing 6th in the NAIA Nationals. Mark went on to coach wrestling at St. John Kanty Prep, Seneca High School, and finally at Harbor Creek High School. As the Huskies coach, Mark's teams won two ECL titles, and he had over 100 wins. He was named Erie County Coach of the Year for two years as well as Sections Coach of the Year. Mark also went on to coach young wrestlers at St. Gregory’s School, the Little Wrestler program in North East, and several club teams in the area. Mark has shown great dedication to the sport of wrestling as a coach and as a mentor to athletes in the region.

Melissa Uglow Mahood graduated from NEHS in 1995. Melissa was an outstanding track and field athlete at NEHS. As a two-time State Champion in the shot put, she held the PIAA state record at 44’11.” This performance earned Melissa First Team All-State honors. She holds the school records in the discus (120’5”) and the shot put (45’6”). Also, she was a three-time County and District 10 Champion, where she set County and District records. She finished 8th at the USA Jr. National Championship in 1995. Melissa also played basketball and volleyball. She excelled in volleyball, where she earned First Team All-County honors and set school records for season aces and career blocks. Melissa continued her education and track and field career at Penn State University where she was an eight-season letter winner and earned many academic awards, including Academic All-American honors, and served as the Student Marshal for the College of Education in 1999.

Mike Miller (1979) was a three-sport athlete at North East High School, lettering in Cross-Country, Basketball, and Track and Field. In 1979, Mike was 2nd team All-County in basketball and set school records in steals and assists for his team. In cross country, Mike was in the top ten in County in 1977 and in ]top ten in County and District in 1979. In Track, Mike was Erie County Champ in the 1600 in 1978 and ECL Champ in both the 1600 and 3200 in 1979. Mike was also on a 3200 relay team that took third in the PIAA State Championships in 1978. He then came back in 1979 and was on a silver medalist 3200 relay team at PIAA States. Mike was also chosen as Male athlete of the year his junior and senior year at NEHS. Mike attended the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown and set school records in the 1600, 3200 and the Mile. He was an All-American in the 1500 in 1983. He was the School’s Athlete “Mountain Cat” of the year in 1983. Mike just narrowly missed qualifying for an opportunity to attend an Olympic Trial. After graduating, Mike won the “Triple Crown” of road racing winning the 10k ,15k, and 20k, dominating these races in Western Pennsylvania. He was also a two-time Keystone State Champion in the 1500. Mike went on to coach at Meyersdale High School in Somerset County, coaching basketball, track, and cross country. He coached the school’s only State Champ in track in the 1600 meter run.

Rick Rouse graduated from NEHS in 1969. Rick was a standout letter winner in basketball and track at NEHS. In track at States, as a sophomore, he was a member of the 5th place 2-mile relay team. In his Junior year, he was a member of the 1st place 2-mile relay team that set a new state record. In his Senior year, Rick was runner up in the PIAA State Championship half-mile with a NEHS record of 1:57.4. Also, he owned the fastest half-mile run in the Erie area Class “A” or “B.” Rick was Honorable Mention-All County Basketball his sophomore year. He was 1st team unanimous selection All-County his Junior and senior years. Rick helped lead the team to the PIAA Western Finals Playoffs in both his Junior and Senior years. He was Erie County Scoring champ his junior year. (22.5) In his senior year he averaged 20 points per game and was the career assist leader. Rick was 5th team little school All-State Selection in his Junior and Senior years.

Steve Rouse (1965) was a three-sport athlete for NEHS. He was a three-year starter in basketball and was voted 1st team All-County in 1965. In Cross Country, Steve was second in District 10 in 1962 and third in District 10 in 1963. He was a PIAA State Medalist in 5th place at the State Meet. In 1962, 1964, and 1965, Steve was a three-time District 10 Champion in the 800-meter run. Steve was an integral part of the 1963 and 1964 PIAA State Championship track teams as he was third in the 800 in 1963 and he was third in 1964. Steve came back his Senior Year and took the Silver Medal in the 800 at the State Championships. Following NEHS, Steve attended Florida State University on a scholarship.
